Buntings (2)

Later, thinking along the same lines as my text of 25 March, it occurred to me that effectively the graying brought about by the camera’s flash is like a broken color effect between two complementary colors. Then a comment by Helen Frankenthaler about her paintings came to mind, “I carry my landscape around with me.” Or words to that effect. I’m not sure I’ve put down her exact words. In any case, here are a few of my own chasings.

Buntings

Backgrounds or stand-alone abstracts? I’m still in the early planning stages as to painting but I was surprised by the gray that came out when I used the flash in one of these photos of concrete wall (interior).

Then also any painted version will obviously have to take into account the question of levels of realism and detail—just what amount of detail does one seek, how much conscious planning enters into the project, etc.

So..... I thought it might be a good moment to share these thoughts on the transfer process.

Stephen Hawking

Like many other people I've been saddened by Stephen Hawking’s death. Having expressed my feelings on social media like Twitter and Google Plus, I wanted to go somewhat further here and briefly note some places that address discourses relating the so called hard sciences—such as Hawking’s field of theoretical physics—and the artistic and literary disciplines. Because due to ethical concerns the divide between these different modes is too often stressed and creates unnecessary tensions.

You may recall that in taking his ideas into non-expert books Hawking was often criticised for excessive popularisation of complex ideas. I think it quite obvious that in fact he was engaged in attempts to clarify matters and do away with precisely the type of tension I’ve referred to. He might have added that he also wanted to clarify energies.

So what I’m trying to say is that I hope we can all continue in our own similar attempts to clarify, different as they may be. Some of the places I’ve found that lend themselves to continued activity along these lines are the following, all of them with presence on the internet:

British Society for Literature and Science
European Society for Literature, Science and the Arts
Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts (U.S.A.)
Empyre Listserv
Virginia Woolf Listserv

ringing rocks

ringing rocks

the distant green field rings
along too          a brick structure lending
not haze or rise but something hinging

time somehow doesn’t stop

a wedding glass raised forth
on that grassy path

constancy of memory’s simultaneity alongside heightened perception apparently due to letting go of enjoyment          those who negotiate

Cézanne’s waves
